Two Types of CrossFit

I love the CrossFit Games! It’s amazing to watch some of the best in the world in the sport of fitness go out there and give it everything they got. When I watch the Games what always impresses me the most isn’t how much weight the athletes are moving or how fast they’re doing the workouts, but how well they are moving. They are incredibly efficient athletes and nearly every rep looks the same regardless of how exhausted they are.

But, while the Games are a time to celebrate how far the sport of fitness and CrossFit as a brand have come, I think it always needs to be put into perspective for someone who is new to CrossFit or maybe has even been around CrossFit for sometime now.

When we talk about CrossFit, it’s important to know what type of CrossFit we are referring to, there are two types:

The Sport of Fitness

The CrossFit Games are the Superbowl of CrossFit. They’re what you see on ESPN every year. They are the best of the best, the elite when it comes to fitness, the top 0.1%. In fact, out of the 273,256 people that registered for the Reebok CrossFit Open, only 102 will advance to the Games – that’s .00037328%.

CrossFit for the sake of Fitness

This is the type of CrossFit that 99.9% of people do everyday. This type of CrossFit is done by teachers, moms, dads, accountants, lawyers, policeman, and firefighters who are just looking to better themselves. While the Games are a great expression of CrossFit, CrossFit for the sake of fitness is CrossFit in its purest form. It’s why CrossFit has become so popular over the past few years, because everyone can do it and it is the best way to get in shape!
